Treatment of ADHD in Adults 1

Description of Intervention
As noted in the CADDRA ADHD Practice Guidelines, “ADHD is not unlike other chronic developmental disorders in that treatment needs to be multi-modal and the patient will require support and follow-up over time.” The intervention in this plan include guidelines, webcasts and monographs designed to help you treat adults with ADHD in primary care settings.  You will learn about FDA approved medications for adults with ADHD, initial and follow-up medication treatment, and psychosocial treatment options for implementation of a multi-modal treatment plan.   3. Review the the Canadian ADHD Practice Guidelines and become familiar with FDA approved medications to treat adult ADHD. (Download specific tools below or download all tools in this section at once).
  4. Set up a system to remind patients about their scheduled appointment.
  5. Have patient education material available (see QI3) for patients that explains facts about FDA approved ADHD medications for adults.
  6. Put reminders in patient charts to repeat administration of ADHD scales to monitor treatment progress on follow-up visits.
  7. Make copies of an ADHD symptom checklist and side-effects checklist to be able to monitor medication effects at follow-up visits.
  8. Educate members of the ADHD care team on how to administer, score, and interpret the scales and screeners you have selected.

Understanding ADHD in Adults (Webcast / Monograph)

In this 26 minute webcast Dr. Russell Barkley provides an overview of ADHD in adults. This is a good place to start to get a good understanding of the characteristics, etiology, epidemiology, and pathophysiology of ADHD in adults along with how this disorder affects the lives of adults.

 Pharmacotherapy of Adult ADHD (Webcast / Monograph)

In this 32 minute webcast Dr. Lenard Adler reviews the FDA approved medications for adults with ADHD and provides an overview of research on safety and efficacy of medication options. This webcast is where you should to start to become familar with medication treatment optons.

Maintenance and Follow-Up Care for Adults with ADHD (Webcast / Monograph)

In this 24 minute webcast Dr. Annthony Rostain will discuss essential components of follow-up care for adults with ADHD that will enhance patient compliance and adherence to medical and non-medical ADHD treatments.

Psychosocial Interventions for ADHD in Adults (Webcast / Monograph)

Most adults diagnosed with ADHD will benefit from pschosocial treatments in addition to medication. In this 20 minute video Dr. J. Russell Ramsay will discuss these therapeutic options so you can make appropriate referrals for patients who need these treatments.

Canadian ADHD Practice Guidelines: CADDRA 2008

These guidelines were developed by the Canadian Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Resource Alliance (CADDRA), a national independent not-for profit association. The guidelines were constructed to help physicians diagnose and treat ADHD.
