Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are more common in the pediatric population than are some better known disorders such as diabetes, spinaa ifida, or Down syndrome. Children with ASD demonstrate deficits in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors or interest. They have unusual responses to sensory experiences and their condition often results in very severe impairment in socialization, learning, and adaptive functioning.

This course provides an overview of ASD, a description of the characteristics and symptoms manifested by children with ASD, available aids, treatment opitions, and a description of research on the biological basis of ASD, causes, and treatments.
