This course provides an overviw of bipolar disorder, a condition that is also known as manic-depressive illness. Bipolar disorder affects more than two million adults and it typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood. It is a long-term illness that can be treated. This course reviews the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder, the spectrum of mood states, etiology, and course of the disorder and methods of assessment and treatment.
Learning Objectives
- identify signs and symptoms of bipolar disroder and discuss the different mood states found in those with this condition
- understand the causes and the course of bipolar disorder
- explain treatments for bipolar disorder including psychopharmacologic treatments and non-psychopharmacologic treatments
