James R. Fogarty, Ed.D.

Dr. Fogarty builds on the work of leading experts, such as Dr. Jeffery Mitchell, to develop a unique approach to crisis debriefing work with trauma survivor groups. Dr. Fogarty develops five life management skills based on the work of William Worden’s tasks of grief. The five life management skills are used to expand and clarify Dr. Jeffery Mitchell’s original components of crisis debriefing. The mental health professional is presented a practical and effective method for working with groups of trauma survivors.

Dr. Fogarty begins by presenting the purpose of crisis debriefing, the difference between counseling and crisis debriefing and the six phases of crisis, as experienced by the trauma survivor. Next, he broadens the concept of the five life management skills, applying them to trauma survivors and crisis debriefing. Special issues are explored, including suicide events, murder, dealing with personality disorders in group, and simple versus complex PTSD.
