Program Summary:
According to the American Stroke Association, every
45 seconds—someone in America has a stroke. Every
3 minutes, someone dies of one. It is the purpose of
this program to understand that brain ischemia may
be brief lasting only seconds to minutes or may
progress to a more permanent concern of tissue
infarction. Accurately and rapidly assessing the status
of a brain event between ischemia and hemorrhagic
stroke can be critical when choosing the correct
treatment modality.
Risks for stroke as a result of clogged carotid arteries are
significant. The distinction between cardiovascular
abnormalities as the cause of stroke or the result of a
stroke can be elusive so understanding the cardiovascular
risk factors associated with stroke will play a
dominant role. Initiating rapid treatment using
thrombolytic agents are key when reviewing drug
therapy in the treatment of strokes. Understanding the
emerging treatment modalities learned from clinical trials
may further improve a higher quality patient outcome.
Criteria used for surgical evacuation of a bleed versus
decompression from cerebral edema will be discussed
as well as the expected clinical outcomes.
The scope of this problem presented by the above
numbers obtained from the American Stroke Association
is costly in terms of hospitalization, emergency room visits
as well as quality of life. This problem is only expected to
increase with the aging population and the obesity
epidemic.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- distinguish the differential diagnosis of ischemic attack
versus the progressive state of cerebral infarction
- discuss how to rapidly assess acute stroke as an
emergency and determine if a patient is a candidate
for thrombolytic therapy
- discuss the cardiovascular risk factors with stroke
and the indications for drug therapy and when and
how long to use them
- explain the use of carotid stenting as a risk reduction
to strokes
- understand indications for neurosurgical intervention
choices for evacuation of bleeds or decompression
due to a massive cerebral edema
- define the three key components of E&M services

UMMS is accredited by ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. UMMS designates this continuing medical education activity for 8 credit hours in Category I toward the Physicians Recognition Award of the American Medical Association. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
Under the auspices of the University of Massachusetts Medical School Office of Continuing Education this offering meets the requirements for 9.6 contact hours, as specified by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (244-CMR 5.04). Each nurse should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spend in the educational activity.
