Target Audience: Primary care physicians, rheumatologists, endocrinologists, OBGYNs,and other health care providers who treat patients with bone diseases.

Program Summary:

The purpose of this course is to provide health care professionals with an authoritative review and update on the management of the most common bone diseases, including primary and secondary osteoporosis, renal osteodystrophy, Paget’s disease and bone oncology. An expert faculty (see proposed faculty below) will address state of the art approaches to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of bone disease, including a brief consideration of new drugs in development. In addition, there will be two interactive sessions with audience participation, one of which will consist of a discussion of current controversies in bone disease management and case presentations, and the other will address pitfalls on bone density measurement.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. describe the epidemiology and pathogenesis of common bone diseases
  2. understand and implement current guidelines for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of bone disease
  3. explain successful measures to prevent disorders of bone and mineral metabolism
  4. participate in discussion of current controversies in the management of bone diseases
  5. discuss the gap between knowledge and practice in the management of bone diseases and strategies for rectifying this
  6. recognize and avoid pitfalls in the use of bone densitometry
  7. understand the mechanism of action of current approved therapies, as well as those in development
  8. recognize the skeletal complications related to bone metastases and cancer therapy
  9. identify unmet needs in the management of bone diseases and ongoing research initiatives
