Program Summary:
This program is a comprehensive overview of current empirical evidence related to osteoporosis and osteopenia. Current incidence and prevalence rates will be addressed as well as the physical, social and societal sequelae of the disorder. A lecture/discussion format of approximately one hour in length will also address the epidemiology and clinical impact of osteoporosis and fractures. Determinants of bone mass and bone quality will be discussed. Fracture risk assessment will be introduced and diagnostic testing will be summarized. Strategies for disease prevention as well as pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions will be reviewed. Future directions in diagnostic and treatment modalities will be presented.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. discuss the pathophysiology, incidence/prevalence, and mortality/morbidity associated with osteoporosis and osteopenia
  2. recognize the risk factors and clinical presentation, including common symptoms and physical examination findings
  3. assess individual fracture risk
  4. choose laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic studies, tests, and procedures helpful in confirming the diagnosis and treatment monitoring
  5. institute appropriate preventive strategies based on individual patient risk
  6. recognize and initiate pharmacologic treatments when warranted
