Program Summary:
New Perspectives in the Management of Cardiovascular Disease: 2008 is a half-day program covering recent advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology and interaction of risk factors in coronary artery disease and cardiovascular disease management. It is designed to provide a review of cardiovascular medicine geared to practicing physicians. Nationally known faculty will present evolving issues and challenges relevant to clinical practice. Key topics include: hypertension, advances in the treatment of heart failure, lipid management, and atherosclerosis in patients with diabetes. The set of lectures will provide a review of established principles of cardiovascular medicine as well as present new concepts and trial-based data in the advancing field of cardiovascular medicine.
In planning this CME activity the National Association for Continuing Education (NACE) performed a needs assessment. A literature search was conducted, national guidelines were reviewed, survey data was analyzed, and experts in each therapeutic area were consulted to determine gaps in practitioner knowledge, competence or performance. Learning objectives (see below), linked to identified gaps, were developed and will be addressed by each presenter. Each participant will be provided with a syllabus containing presentations, clinical tools, and practical guidelines at the start of the program to be used for future reference.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- describe the management of hypertension and the trial data supporting an evidence based approach
- describe the need for aggressive cholesterol lowering and the value of various therapies
- understand atherosclerosis in diabetes and techniques for addressing cardiovascular risk reduction
- recognize and apply recommendations for management of patients with heart failure as they relate to advances in the use of devices for the treatment of heart failure
- understand the indications for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT)
