Target Audience: Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants.

Program Summary:
This program will provide Primary Care Physicians the opportunity to learn first hand from national thought leaders in their field. The goal is to provide a clearer understanding of several of the most common disease processes, in light of rapid scientific advances. By doing so, attendees will walk away with new insights and learn useful strategies to manage the challenges faced on a daily basis.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. more fully understand the origins of insulin resistance and type 2 Diabetes, and review studies of atherosclerosis prevention in patients with type 2 Diabetes
  2. utilize appropriate first line therapies in the treatment of diabetes with the goal of targeting the various metabolic pathways in the management of hyperglycemia, thereby preventing development of complications
  3. understand the role for insulin in patients with type 2 diabetes and develop strategies for initiating and adjusting therapy
  4. utilize evolving data and novel therapies to understand and more effectively manage patients with chronic constipation
  5. understand the benefits of endovascular techniques and the role of carotid stenting in prevention and treatment of cerebrovascular disease
  6. recognize the importance of achieving the recommended goal blood pressure rather than the superiority of a specific antihypertensive over another in improving patient outcome and understanding the importance of combination therapy to achieve effective blood pressure control
  7. more effectively assess wounds commonly seen in practice and utilize new technologies, as well as current treatment protocols, in wound bed preparation and wound management
  8. understand that COPD is not only a problem of the lungs but also a disease with important systemic consequences that does respond to many forms of effective therapy
  9. recognize the signs of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, guide appropriate evaluation and discuss the latest therapeutic options
  10. evaluate and diagnose the etiology of anemia of chronic kidney disease, understand its implications in heart failure, and guide treatment decisions based on emerging data
  11. more effectively minimize practice liability exposure, structure the practice environment in an efficient and productive manner, and assess different strategies for acquisition of the physical plant and equipment
